NOT HOSTILE
MINISTER’S ATTITUDE TO MOTORISTS [By Telegraph—Press Association] WELLINGTON, This Day. Representatives of the North Island Motor Union conferred for an hour yesterday afternoon with the Minister of Transport, Hon. R. Semple. The talk was held in private. At the conclusion of the conference, the Minister said: “The representatives of the Motor Union who met me this afternoon were more than satisfied with my attitude toward motorists. It is anything but hostile. A statement published on "Wednesday evening was absolutely unjustified and unwarranted. I had made no pronouncement about the S Main Highways Board other than to say that, no doubt, we would look into the constitution of the board with a view to improving the position. I never intimated that the Highways Board had to go. “In fact, I have said nothing detrimental to the motorists of the Dominion; all that I have said has been in their favour. In the ‘Motorists’ Journal’ of December 20, 1935, there is a long report of an interview with me. It indicates definitely that I am not the enemy, but the friend, of the motorists of this country. The comment that some gentlemen made at the meeting "of the Motor Union relative to my attitude toward motorists was ungenerous.”
