MENACE OF UNITED STATES COMPETITION REPRESENTATIONS TO AUSTRALIA! CONSIDERATION TO BE GIVEN * (United Press Association— By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 31st January, 12.45 p.m.) CANBERRA, This Day. To enable British-owned vessels to withstand the serious competition to which they are subjected by United States ships in the trans-Pacific service, proposals similar to those made to the New Zealand Government have now been made to the Commonwealth Government. Mr N. S. Falla, managing-director of the Union Company, and Mr A. J. Soutar, Sydney manager, interviewed the Prime Minister, Mr J. A. Lyons, and proposed that , British-owned vessels should be subsidised and American liners be’prohibited from carrying passengers only between Australia and New Zealand.
Mr Lyons said the New Zealand and Australian Governments were in consultation on the matter. The Federal Government had undertaken to give consideration to the proposals, but he was awaiting ail expression of views of the Dominion Government. Action would be taken by the Commonwealth only if the co-operation of the New Zealand and British Governments were obtained. It was intended that Dr. Earle Page (Minister for Commerce) and Mr R. G. Menzies (Attorney-General) would disbuss the matter with the British Government during the forthcoming visit- to London!
