THRILLING YACHT RACE

After thrilling racing, in which four boats had taken a turn in leading the fleet, the second race of the Sanders Memorial Cup was won yesterday afternoon hy the Wellington boat Lavina, which crossed the line with only 56 seconds in hand from Val (Otago), who in turn beat Avenger (Canterbury) by IS seconds. ‘ The Auckland boat, Aileen, and Southland’s representative were some four minutes later.

Owing to light and variable airs the race in the morning was not finished within the stipulated time of three hours. The race in the afternoon was over exactly the same course. The wind had strengthened considerably, however, hut in spite of this the last boat completed tlie course witli only about 15 minutes to spare. With bright sunshine and small craft throwing spray while pitching into the' choppy water some hundreds of spectators who followed the race both in launches and from the shore were treated to a fine spectacle.
