RHODES SCHOLARS

This term, a “Rhodes Scholar,” commemorates the late Mr Cecil Rhodes, the statesman-financier after whom Rhodesia is called. It was his conviction that tlie cause of world peace could only be forwarded by better understanding between the different people. This could best be realised by members of other countries coming into touch with one another. With this object, the terms of his will laid down a Trust to which a huge sum of money was committed from his private fortune, the interest providing foi; so many scholarships at Oxford University. Young men from the great British. Dominions and Colonies as well as from the United States of America are eligible for election, and the Rhodes Scholars, at the conclusion of their terms, leave Oxford to return home with an understanding of English ways and ideals.
