MAGISTRATE’S COURT

The following cases were dealt with in the Magistrate’s Court this morning before Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M. : Henry E. Adamson, who had a previous conviction, was charged with drunkenness. He was fined £1 in default three days’ imprisonment. A man whose name was suppressed was remanded to appear in Blenheim on a charge of theft. Harold Motl'att Couper was charged that on 12th December at Nelson he did steal £l9 17s Cd the property of the Waimea County Council. The accused, who was represented by Mr W. C. Harley, in the absence of Mr S. Moynagli, pleaded not guilty and elected to he tried by this court. Detective J. McLeod asked for an adjournment as the accused had pleaded guilty before. Mr Harley- in explaining wliy tlie plea had been altered said' there Were certain facts to be considered. The accused had been treated by a doctor for sleeping sickness and had-no recollection of having given liis wife a sum of money before going into hospital. Medical textbooks showed that it was an occasional symptom of this case that before an outbreak the patient became mentally unbalanced. After quoting a case from a medical book Mr Harley said there was a. possibility that it was not a crime. _ The accused was remanded till <th February and ordered to submit to a medical examination. Wilfred E. Thomas was charged with procuring liquor during the cuirency of a prohibition order. The accused did not appear and the case was adjouned till his apprehension, a warrant being issued. _ , . , Robert Johnston, for riding a bicycle over a footbridge in Hardy street, was fined 10s and costs 10s. David Ollson (Mr C. R. Fell) pleaded guilty to parking lii.s car within 20ft of the intersection of Oollingwood and Bridge streets. Mr Fell said that the circumstances were that Ollson had driven to the Goodrich service station hut the entranbe was blocked. He left the car outside and went in to see the manager about it, and when he came out Traffic Inspector Parkinson was there.

Costs only (13s) were imposed. The last two charges were laid by Traffic Inspector C. lb Parkinson.
