BOAT CAPSIZES

YOUTH DROWNED IN WAIROA RIVER THREE COMPANIONS SWIM TO SAFETY (By Telegraph—Press Association) : DARGAVILLE, 29th January. Through the capsizing of a flat-bot-tomed boat shortly after 5 o’clock this afternoon, four boys were precipitated into the Northern Wairoa river, and Leonard Sydney Lawrence, aged 19, of Parore street, Dargaville, was drowned. The other occupants were liis younger brother, Thomas Edward Lawrence, Nathaniel Edward Robinson, of Parore street, Dargaville, and Ronald Sydney Martin, 07 Wanganui Avenue, Auckland.

Tiie boat was about half-wav across the river just traffic bridge north of the town, where the river is about a third of a mile in width, when it struck rough water and capsized. The elder LaiVrence, after about 25 yards, was in difficulties, and in spite of help from the others, failed to reach the bank.

Sergeant Culloty and Constable Newland commenced dragging operations, hut met with no success. Tile tide was running out. The river is very muddy and discoloured'at any time.
