RAILWAYS GOODS SERVICE

REORGANISATION IN NORTH ' ' ' ISLAND , (By Telegraph—Preas Association) PALMERSTON N., This Day. Consequent upon the decision by the Railway Department to reorganise the goods service between Auckland and Wellington and Auckland a rift - New Plymouth, a number of transfers of the locomotive staff is taking place as a result of which several will be added to the Palmerston North group. The new timetable is to become operative on 9th February. This centralisation, it was stated to-day, is being brought about in order to improve the goods' service. More powerful engines are now in use and it is necessary for the staff for these to be brought together at main centres. There is not now need for staff and hauling power to be stationed at intermediate points. For instance, one engine which wastes its potential power in engine sheds at Marton for fourteen hours daily will be brought here and given work which will ensure longer running, thus lessening costs.
