FARMERS’ UNION MEETING

A meeting of the Riwaka branch of the.Farmers’ Union was held in the Library on Wednesday evening, when Mr K. j. Holyoake, M.P., presided. As the result of a circular letter issued by the Farmers’ Union headquarters, dealing with the question of farm labour wages, a lengthy discussion was taken in committee and a resolution passed. The resolution was: “That this branch of the Farmers’ Union forward the fol lowing recommendations to the Provincial Executive: ‘That direct'representation be made to the Minister of Employ* ment in connection with the question of farm labour for seasonal work in this provincial district, in the coming season, along the following lines: (1) That any man refusing to take farm work offered him at the minimum rate of Is 3d per hour, be refused work on any public works subsidised by unemployment taxation, or on any part time relief of unemployment work. (2) That the men so concerned be assured that they will be re-employed on the public or relief works they leave, immediately the seasonal work is completed. (3) that the usual stand down period be abolished when these men are so re-employed.”
