OBITUARY

MR R. N. GRAY The death is announced in Melbourne of Mr Randolph Norman Gray, at the age of 44 years. Born in Ballarat, he was the eldest son of the late Rev.-11. S. Gray and Mrs M. A. Gray, Wellington, and came to New Zealand at an early age with his parents.! He was educated at the Christchurch Boys’ High School arid the Canterbui-” University College, securing his early legal training in the office of Mr J. A. Flesher, Christchurch, and later joining the firm of Downie Stewart and Payne in.JDunedin. In 1915 lie joined the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, and served in Egypt and on the Western Front until the end of the war. He enlisted as a private in the Second New Zealand Field Ambulance, taking part in the first battle of the Somme, for which lie received the Military Medal. After taking his commission, he was promoted secondlieutenant in the Canterbury Regiment. Prior to the battle of Passcheildaele, he received his captain’s commission and was awarded tho Military Cross in that engagement. He was appointed adjutant of the New Zealand Base Camp at Etaples and served in that capacity until after the Armistice, when he was appointed officer in charge of the educational establishment at Hornchurch. On Ids return to New Zealand he engaged in fruit-farming in the Nelson province for some years, and later accepted a position in Sydney with a large general advertising firm. At the time of his death he was secretary of Georges Pty., Ltd., in Melbourne.

Mr Gray married, in'l92o, (lie younger daughter of Mrs A. Pe.irg, Wellington, and leaves a family of three young children.
