TOWN BOARD MEETING

POSITION OF FINANCES

At the first meeting of tiie Tahunnniii Town Board for the year 19.10, there were present: Messrs C. Chamberlain, ,). Logan, A. Stagg, J. Radford and \V. G. Tiller. As Mr M. O’Sullivmi, the chairman was unable to attend, Mr C. Chamberlain was elected to the chair. Accounts amounting to £42 13s fid were passed for payment. RATES OWING TO BOARD In reviewing the Board finances the Town Clerk (Mr R. Brownlie) said that the total debit balance was £649. He had notified the ratepayers that their rate payment was due but so far only £l7 bad been collected. He expected that the rates collected would cut down the debit by more tlian half. In all there was about £7OO in rates owing to the Board. In view of the heavy debit, it was resolved that the clerk prepare a statement of the finances to he considered by the Board at an carlv date.

The foremen’s reports were read and adopted.

CORRESPONDENCE

The clerk stated that he had written to the Main Highways Board on lltli December stating that the portion of the main highway in the Town Board area was in a bad condition and needed inspection. He had not yet received a reply. The chairman said that the matter was urgent and it was decided that another letter be sent.

The sum of £2 ]os is tn he paid to Mr Johns i n part payment for a fence dividing his property from the Town Hall.

On 18th December the clerk wrote to the Municipal Association stating that several residents had filled in ditches running through tlielr property without the Board's authority. Some of these ditches were important as they conveyed water from the neighbouring hills. An opinion on the matter was asked of the Municipal Association solicitor.

A reply was received stating that the offenders could he brought before a magistrate and were liable to pay a substantial fine. Tt was decided, before taking action, to allow members of the Works Committee to peruse the Municipal Association’s reply, as it was fairly lengthy.

PETITION NOT RECEIVED BY MINISTER,

After the last Board meeting a letter was sent to tile Minister of Internal A Bairs stating that a petition, signed by SS ratepayers of the Talmnauui Town Board area, who wished to join the Waimea County, had been prepared for the consideration of the Minister.

The Town Clerk pointed out that the total number of ratepayers in the area was 19,5, and all except the SS petitioners were quite satisfied with the Board’s administration.

A reply was received from the Minister on 23nl December stating that he had not then received the petition, as required under the Town “Board Act, I9OS, regarding the adjusting of the Town' boundary.

A plan of the. specification of a new road through the Toswill estate was received from the surveyor. Consideration of the plan .was left for a full Board meeting, and meanwhile the Board chairman (Mr O'Sullivan) is to interview Mr Bishop with regard to the place where Mr Bisley’s road and Toswill’s road are to join.
