HOLD ON EGYPT
“BRITAIN IS TIGHTENING” ARABIC PRESS ATTACKS UNHAPPY UNITED FRONT (United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 14th January, 12.35 p.m.) LONDON, 13th January. Both “The Times” and “The Telegraph’s” correspondents at Cairo suggest that things are not going happily with the newly-formed United Front, the chief complication being Arabic press attacks on Britain’s participation in* the Mersematruh railway as another British method of tightening her hold on Egypt. This campaign is sponsored by those opposed to the Wafd Cabinet as distinct from the one with UnitedFront personnel. It is now suggested that to thwart this anti-Government campaign, the Finance Minister should propose that Egypt bear the whole cost of the railway. Meanwhile the Wafd is showing disinclination to permit the United Front after election to conduct treaty negotiations with Britain. It is even suggested that the Wafd will withdraw from the United Front if the point is pressed, as it is seemingly convinced that the elections would give it the necessary authority to negotiate the treaty as the most powerful party.
