GAMING LEGISLATION
“MAY UNDERGO ALTERATION” FINES AT AUCKLAND (By Telegraph—Press Association) AUCKLAND, This Day. Nine men appeared in the Police Court this morning charged with bookmaking or keeping a common gaming bouse. Their appearance was the result of Auckland detectives’ last round up of bookmakers in 1935. Fines imposed by Mr McKean, S.M., were: Lionel Arthur Baker, £10; Albert Clarence Tait, £10; Frederick Walter Breed (third conviction), £SO; Edward Martin Harvey Nicholson, £2O; William Joseph Bird and Allan Bremner, who admitted partnership in a common gaming house, £2O each. Appearing for one defendant, Air F. W. Schramm, M.P., said that gaming legislation in New Zealand may undergo some alteration in the near future. The Magistrate commented that the previous fines infliefed by him were apparently no deterrent. The hearing of charges of bookmaking against William George Bloomfield, William Flynn and Thomas Archibald Hayes was adjourned,.
