THE FIRE ALARM SYSTEM

ATTITUDE OF CITY COUNCIL For some time the Underwriters’ Association representatives, on the Nelson Fire Board have advocated the installation of a street fire alarm system in Nelson, but the other members of the board have opposed the proposal. At last night’s meeting of the City “Council, the Mayor, (Mr G. L. Page) Council representative on the board, reported that the question of the alarm system; had been .referred to at the last meeting of the board. . The . Underwriters 'representatives were .anxious that the installation should be made, but the Council considered it was not necessary. The cost of a system with 40 alarm boxes would be front £llOO to £I2OO. He iiad pointed out that the system was not necessary with so many telephones available in the town. In the past year all 27 calls to the brigade had been made by the telephone, and he expressed the opinion that the expenditure would not be justified. Councillor S. A. Gibbs isaid the Council representatives on the board should be congratulated on thci.v attitude.
