ARACHNE’S OAKLEIGH PLATE

MELBOURNE, 16th February. The V.A.T.C. meeting opened at Caulfield. The weather was fine and the track comparatively slow. Arachne won the Oakleigb Plate brilliantly, establishing a weight-carrying record for a thrce-year-oid. Winooka, having his second race since his return from America, performed notably in carrying 105 into second place. S. Davidson, the rider of Arachne in the Oakleigb Plate, was suspended for two months for crossing too sharply after the start, and interfering with several horses, including Winooka, lhe Marne, Titanium and Lalulu King. Re. suits:—•
Federal Stakes, first division—Sithon, 7.7 (11. Badger) 1; Gay Aruley, 7.11 (O’Brien) 2; Aureus, 9.2 (Elliot) 3, Twelve started. Won by ball a length, a head. Time, 1.2|. Second division— Solfast,, 7.8 (Knox) 1; Nalda, 7.7 (Tomison) 2; Silver Planet, 7.4 (C. Badger) 3. Twelve starters, including Lady Primrose and Ilomer. The latter did not get away well, and just as ho was beginning to make up ground near the home turn he was twice squeezed out, and was actually fourth to last entering the straight, but finished fourth. Won by half a head, two and a half lengths. Time, l.lg. Bond Handicap—Burlesque, 9.2 (Dewhurst) 1; Dark Chief, 8.2 (McCavten) 2 ; Sylvandale, 8.7 (Pratt) 3. Twelve starters, including Queen Helen. Won by half a length, a head. Time, 2.34 1-5. OAK LEIGH PLATE, of £1500; five furlongs and a half — Arachne, 8.11 (Davidson) ... 1 Winooka, 10.5 (Pike) 2 Heros, 9.0 (Dempsey) 3 All started. Arachne was fifty away, hut quickly ran to the front and was never troubled to win by two and a half lengths. Winooka was in the middle of the field at the start, but quickly ran up ail’d was behind Arachne and Silver King when the field settled down. He finished well under his heavy weight, Araunali was eighth, Sir John twelfth, and First Money last. Won by half a length, a neck between second and third. Time, 1.6. St. George Stakes—Farndale, 7.7 (H. Badger) 1; Hall Mark, 9.10 (Dempsey) 2; Tlieo, 8.13 (McCarten) 3. Also started : Latrobe, Allenby. Won by one and three-quarters length, a length. Time, 1.51. Collossical, Chief Light and Cape Lilock were unplaced in the Salisbury Welter. IN TASMANIA LAUNCESTON, 16th February. At the Tasmania Racing Club’s meeting the Charles Youl Handicap resulted ; Argument, 7.6 (Keys) 1; Vai'ron, 7.5 (Jordan) 2; Weatherwise, 7.1 (O’Neill) 3. Won by half a length, two lengths. Time, 2.4 1-5. AT ADELAIDE
ADELAIDE, 16th February. The Amateur Turf Club Races were held to-day. The Bungaree Handicap resulted—Prince Paladin, 7.9 (Stocker), 1; Royal Rest, 9.7 (Bromley) 2; Million, 8.7 (llopwood) 3. Seven starters, including Tenterden. Won by half a length, a head. Time, 1.57£.
WARWICK FARM MEETING
NEW ZEALANDER’S SUCCESS
SYDNEY, 16th February. For the Warwick Farm Races' the weather was fine and the track very heavy. The principal events went to the New Zealanders Norman Conquest and Love Song. Results:— Gfenfield Handicap, six furlongsNorman Conquest, 8.0 (Maxwell), 1; Questionnaire, 9.10 (W. Cook), B; Regular Bachelor, 9.2 (O’Sullivan), 3. Ten started, including Croupier. Won by a length, a head. Time, 1.16. Warwick February Handicap—Love Song, 7.12 (Hickey), 1; Limyris, 8.0 (Marsden) 2; Royal Son, 9.0 (Bartle) 3. Also started: Fame, Elmaros. Liwyris made the running for most of the way, but Love Song finished very strongly. Won by one and a half lengths, a length. Time, 2.15. Limoux was unplaced in the Farm Novice. WIN FOR GOLDEN MILLER LONDON, 16th February. Golden Miller won the Grand International Steeplechase at Sandon, easily heating the Grand National aspirants Really True and Delaneige.
