LAWN TENNIS

INTER-CLUB MATCH

KELSON DEFEATS MARLBOROUGH

On Saturday last representatives pf the Nelson and Marlborough Tennis Clubs competed for the Challenge Cup at Blenheim. The Nelson team were the holders of the Cup and for the lirst time on record the visiting team was successful in retaining the trophy, Nelson winning by 3:1 matches to 21. It was pleasing to know that on this occasion the tail end of the Nelson team was successful in winning the majority of matches and as most of the latter portion of the Nelson team was composed of new players it was a worthy achievement on their part. The outstanding victory was that of Miss King, who played top in the ladies’ singles against Miss Wood, the former winning her match by the narrow margin of one game. This was the first occasion on which a Nelson lady has been able to beat such a strong opponent as Miss Wood. The weather conditions were all that could be desired and the matches were played in a sporting spirit. The Blenheim team excelled itself in its hospitality toward the 3,1 visitors who journeyed to Blenheim on this occasin.
