HAWKE CUP

POOR SCORING MANAWATU LEADS ON FIRST INNINGS (By Telegraph—Press Association) PALMERSTON N., This. Day. • ■ In a game in which the bowlers on both sides dominated play, the position at stumps in the Hawke Cup match between Manawatu and Marlborough was in a very interesting position, the former. securing a lead of nine runs on the first innings. Marlborough’s total of 123 fell far short of anticipations of the challengers’ supporters, but the Manawatu attack was deadly. Similarly the Manawatu batsmen failed miserably from a judicious bowling- attack. The end of Marlborough’s first innings came when Aut.y, who had been batting steadily, failed to connect with a slow delivery of Gallichan and had the bails lifted, bis total, being 18. Rowe played Gallichan with the pads to go 1.b.w., the innings closing with a mediocre . total of 123. Murchison and McVicar opened for ■. Manawatu shortly after three o’clock. The former had a life when a short fun just saw him gain the crease. The former had his wicket shattered when the fast bowler, A. Robinson,. beat him all the way. Cutter did not iast long, this usually prolific scorer playing one back to K. Robinson. Norris and McVicar were assisted in a partnership which steadily carried tile score to 73 when the home captain gave a chance to' Cress- ’ well which was accepted. . . The wickets then fell fairly quickly, R. Hatch, McVicar, Monteith, K. Hatch ‘ , and M. Ongley being dismissed. Galli- - chan, however, held up his end well, being supported by a High School boy, Pollitt, until the latter played forward ■ to K. Robinson to be bowled; Ber- - quist, the last man, was taken by Neal"; at square leg. ' The innings closed at six o’clock with Manawatu nine ahead of their oppon- : ents. In the final half hour of play.".’ Marlborough lost Barrat, the highest; ' scorer in the first innings, who ■ was - beaten all the way by Hatch, but Cress- -v well and Hundeby played out time, though the former narrowly escaped dismissal, a hot catch in the slips being dropped. bcores:— MARLBOROUGH First Innings Neal, b Ongley 18 Barratt, c Berquist, b Gallichan ....- • >3l ?
