NELSON TROTTING CLUB

THE ANNUAL MEETING REPORT AND ELECTION OF OFFICERS COMING MEETING Tlie annual meeting of the Nelson Trotting Club ivas held last evening, Mr G. Hogg presiding over a small attendance. The report and balance sheet were adopted. The report stated: The annual meeting has been delayed untii something definite could be stated as to the club’s probable activities for the current season The club called nominations for a meeting in February on stakes of £B2O, but the response from owners, although it certainly had encouraging features in all the circumstances, was definitely not sufficient to warrant the committee going on with the meeting. It was certain that by acceptance time there would not have been enough horses to run a meeting, while a heavy financial loss was an absolute certainty. Your committee therefore had no option hut to abandon the meeting. Long and sustained efforts over a considerable period were made for permission to again race at Greymouth, and it is considered that had the committee been given a free hand, we would have 'been successful in so doing. However, permission was ultimately refused, and th§ permit was used by Greymouth. involving them, we understand, and regret, in considerable loss. Concerning this season, it was apparent to your committee that greatly increased ’support would be necessary to enable the club to run a successful meeting, and having extricated the club from serious difficulties on previous occasions by racing away, which avenue is now closed, a public meeting was called in May last to consider the position As a, result a canvass was made for now members and guarantees. At a further meeting on 2nd October, when progress was roported, it was decided I to put out a programme for Ist and 3rd December with stakes of £I3OO, and to continue the canvass for members, etc. This has now been done, and nominations on 14th November .are awaited with considerable interest. There are reasonably good prospects for securing sufficient horses, and the committee appreciates the interest which has been shown by a number of enthusiasts, but they must emphasise in the strongest possible manner that everyone concerned must do his best to push the meeting and secure ngw members, and the attendance of friends and the general public at the gathering. With prospects of a good season and good weather and the effort the club is making to rehabilitate itself, there is every good reason for bringing pre-sure to bear upon every person in the district who is interested in sport to give tho club all the assistance possible. Regarding the past year, the accounts show a loss of £99 Os 3d, notwithstanding that the secretary has voluntarily written off the whole of his salary. It should he pointed out, however, that Trotting Conference levies, etc., and depreciation account for £74 bs, and the only expenses incurred for the year were in connection with the abandoned meeting and ordinary routine charges. Subscriptions paid amounted to only £l6 14s, but as members had had no raco meeting for two years and the position was uncertain, the committee did not feel justified in pressing for subscriptions, Lut needless to say those who wish to help by keeping financial will materially assist by doing so. A ,number of members have already paid up as a result of the canvass sinco.the close of the year, but these amounts will be included in the current year’s working. . . Election of Officers: The nominations received for the various official posi-’ tions were as follows : President,'Mr Geo. Hogg: vice-president, Mr G. A. Day; committee (nine required), Messrs H. Guv, C Newman, E B. Moore, F. 0. Hamilton, H. F. West. F. Atkinson. Stewards (10 required), the above six, with the -addition of Mr E. G. Moore. Tlie three vacancies on the committee have been caused by the death of Mr J. A. Stringer, the departure from Nelson of Mr Iv. M. Hickson, and the retirement of Mr W. Moorhouse. The committee under the rules has appointed Mr H. M. Boyle, thus leaving two vacancies to be filled. Meeting attendances (7 meetings): The president 7, Messrs Moore, West and Gay 6.
