BUSINESS AT COUNCIL MEETING

The monthly meeting of tho council of tho Acclimatisation Society was held in the Anglers’ Club room’ last evening. In the absence of Mr A. E. Dee Mr A. Taylor was elected to the chair, and there were also present Messrs J. G. Ingram, A. E. Shuttle-worth, A. Niehol, A. Harling. J. Bvrno, R. Newport, and the secretary Mr W. A. Andrews. A vote of sympathy was passed to the family of a life member who had passed away, the late Mr W. Hargreaves. The curator, Mr Newport, in his report mentioned that • this year they had had at- least 100,000 more fry owing to a highly successful hatching. He had liberated about 630,000 fry. The quantities put in the various rivers were as follows: Leo Valley 50,000, Aniseed Valley, 50,000, Wairoa Gorge 50,000, Riwaka 45,000, Motueka Valley 50,000, Whangapeka 50,000, Mangles Valley 25,000, Gowan Valley about 30,000 Rainbow, Maitai 70.000 Pelorus, Rai and Whangamoa 80,000. _ A quotation for the price of pheasants was received from the North Canterbury Society. It was decided that the writers be notified that the Nelson Society is not contemplating purchasing pheasants this season.

It was resolved that the question of the open game season, brought up by tlie Department of Internal Affairs, he considered at the next monthly meeting. A statement from Mr IT. G. Williams of shags shot on inland lakes in Otago over a number of years showed that in a total of 975 shags shot there were 5171 trout, 14 perch, 6 lampreys, no eels, 15 kokopu, and 12 other fish, making an average of 5.3 trout per shag. Tlie question was referred to the hatchery committee for action. Accounts passed for payment totalled £Bl 7s 9d. . It- was decided to get information from collectors as to the success they are meeting with in their attempts to purchase vermin in their respective districts. It was resolved to notify Marlborough (hat the society has liberated 50,000 fry in the Pelorus and the Rai rivers.
