BRITISH NAVY
FIRST CONVOY SLOOP DESIGNED TO FILL DANGEROUS GAP (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, 3rd September. Tlie “Daily Telegraph’s” naval correspondent says H.M.S. Bittern, the Navy’s first convoy sloop, will shortly be launched at Clydebank. She is designed to fill a dangerous gap in the Empire’s sea defences. Owing to treaty restrictions, Britain is short of modem cruisers. H.M.S. Bittern does not exceed 2000 tons, hut carries two 6-inch guns instead of two 4.7 guns, the smaller guns hitherto carried by sloops. Thus H.M.S. Bittern should be able to engage any submarine. If the type is successful, twenty-five or thirty may be added to the Navy. They will be an in. valuable reinforcement and each costs less than a destroyer.
