CHARITY CUP COMPETITION ANOTHER drawn game RESULTS AT A. GLANCE Senior — Wakatu 2, Waimai 1. Kiwi 0, Federal 0. Junior— Wakatu 4, Waimai 1. Women’SrHuia 6, Wakatu 1. The players found the heat a little trying at the Botanical Reserve on Saturday when games in the Charity Cup knock-out- competition were played off. Wakatu. and Waimai who had drawn the week before had another close game which Wakatu won by 2 goals to 1. Federal and Kiwi, meeting in the second round, engaged in a dour struggle, trying for both players and spectators alike, in which neither side could score. This game will be played off again next Saturday, after which the winner'will meet'Wakatu in the final on the same afternpon. WAKATU WIN PLAY-OFF Wakatu and Waimai did not stage ,an interesting game when they played off on Saturday. The end-of-season feeling was apparently affecting both teams for at the set time for beginning only half the teams were ready to take the field. The game started ten minutes late and then Waimai played under the handicap of being two short.

The teams were: . Wakatu: Winter; Coombes, Mayson; Master, Best, Chapman; Gaskell, West, Nightingale, Harford, Thomas. Waimai: Bush; O’Callaghan, Hobbs, Bowden, Perrin, Brown, Scott, Amos, and Wilson.

Play opened indifferently. Nightingale followed in a shot by Harford and netted. hut a penally corner was given against Waimai. Wakatu continued to exert pressure. A centre by Gaskell was well placed but was kicked by Nightingale. The same player missed a shot soon afer. Wakatu were given chances from corner hits but the. attempts broke down. Waimai made one or two sallies into the Wakatu lircle but did not look dangerous. Gaskell was unfortunate with a backstick shot hut soon after in a corner hit, though o’Callaghan blocked a shot the forwards rushed 'in and Gaskell netted. Wakatu I, ■ Waimai Q. Waimai lost two chances by kicking in the circle, but Wakatu similarly losta glorious scoring opportunity by giving “sticks” in front of goal. Bowden by good stick work stopped a Wakatu rush and set Brown off on a run into the circle where he put in a shot which just missed. The play until half-timo was .desultory with few redeeming fea lures.

The second spell saw Waimai more active but unable to score. Harford delayed a pass in the circle and was robbed of the ball by Bowden. Waimai attacked bard and were conceded a corner. From this Wakatu returned play to the other circle where a shot by Gaskell was well stopped. O’Callaghan showed not a little speed in putting Waimai on attack and when Wakatu failed to tackle Amos ran in and netted Waimai 1, Wakatu i. With the prospect of another drawn game both sides put more spirit into their play. Wakatu were put ahead by a good solo effort by Harford. Receiving from a bully between Amos and Nightingale, Harford’ cut through and netted. Wakatu 2, Waimai 1. The referees were Messrs J. W. Russell and E. R. Neale. KIWI AND FEDERAL PLAY GOALLESS GAME The second drawn game in the knock out competition was played between Federal and Kiwi) when the senior competition leaders were unable to score, largely through the efforts of a. keen defence and notably Busch who played a fine game at centre-half. The teams were as follows: Kiwi: Holland; Hawke, Jenner; Toms, Busch, Paterson : Guthrie, Burns, Mayo, Harris, Paterson. Federal: Jensen; Frost, Hunter; leirill, J. Gibbons; McKenzie; Beach, T. Gibbons, Best, Miller, Huggins. The game soon showed signs ot doveloning into a hard struggle. When Kiwi reached the circle they adopted quick bustling tactics. A hold-up occurred when Busch received a hard hit on the fingers! The closest to a score was when Burns received the hall from Guthrie but hooked his shot past the goal. The game lacked highlights though full of vigour. Burns followed a hard hit right through from the 25 but could not connect with the him again in the circle. Federal reached the circle several times hut were ragged. There was a good deal of furious slashing at the ball on both sides, which nullified comer hits and attempts at passing movements. The forwards saw a. good deal of the ball but both sets of halves played a keen spoiling game. Soon after” the start of the second spell saw a fast run through by Burns, the hall going over the back line. A rood dash was made by T Gibbons, but it ended in Hawke beating him for possession of the ball. Federal went off in a promising forward rush, being met by Holland, who came out of goal and kicked clear. There was a lamentable exhibition for a. while of poor control of the ball, overrunning and fumbling being particularly glaring. Kiwi remained in Federal territory for a period and were .rot far off scoring once or twice. Federal worked hard for a goal when Beach made a run on the wing and passed infield where the forwards battled for possession. . Failure to run strongly and straight, but instead running in circles with the ball'were weaknesses of the play. There was a dangerous situation for Federal when Burns' broke through and was clear away. Hunter came back fast and tackled him while Frost blocked a shot by Harris who was backing up. The steady play of the Federal fullbacks was one of the bright spots of the game. Players did not show much vim when they were content to stand off while the full-back leisurely cleared, as was the case several times. A: smartshot by Paterson was safely taken on Jenson’s pads, while T. Gibbons for Federal shot past the posts. J. Gibbons received a nasty smack when the ball from a hard clearing hit rose sharply and struck him above tho eye. He was attended to by a St. John Ambulance attendant and left tho field. Frost intercepted in great style when the Kiwi forward lino was going away in a fast rush. The game then ended with no score registered. Messrs J. W. Russell and E R. Neale were the referees.
