SATURDAY’S FOOTBALL McCarthy cup challenge CELTIC DEFEAT ATHLETIC OLD BOYS BY 2 TO 1 Victory Square was in better condition on Saturday than it has been for many weeks, and some bright football was expected in the .McCarthy Cup challenge between Celtic and Athletic Old Boys, hut Athletic were unfortunate insofar as they took the field with eight men. Despite this fact they held Celtic until halftime without any score being registered. But in the second spell Celtic managed to score twice after Athletic had held the advantage of one goal for a time. The teams' were as follows :
Athletic Old Boys: Smith, Mansell, Heath, McKellar, Butler, Veysey, Beveridge,’ St evens. Celtic: Rae, Coxhill, Easier, Livingstone, Marine, Win, Clarke, Pryor, 'Devereaux, Rymell, Clementson. Athletic Kicked off, and Celtic, having the advantage in numbers, were very soon attacking, but Athletic, who were playing one full back only, repeatedly had the Celtic forwards' caught offside, wliicn kept Celtic well out, and when the challengers did break through Smith was very alert and saved Athletic time and time again,' The wind was behind Celtic and on numerous occasions what would have been a nice forward pass went- sailing over the goal fine lor a goal kick; Half time came with no score.
The second half commenced briskly, Celtic attacking strongly. Smith saved twice in quick ' succession, from shots from Clcmentson and Clarke. Athletic broke away and Stevens passed to Beveridge who scored with a good shot. Athletic Old Boys 1, Celtic. 0. Celtic however livened up to attack vigorously, and from a- ■ pass from Mackie. Coxhill scored a splendid goal. Athletic Old. Boys. 1, Celtic 1. \ Athletic ti’ied hard to regain the lead and were unlucky not to score when the ball seemed to have everyone beaten and was practically on the goal line before Haslcr cleared to touch. Celtic again attacked Coxhill leading a rush b.efore lie passed, to Clementson, who centred-to Devereaux, the latter scoring Celtic 2, Athletic Old Boys 1. Smith came out into the field and McKellar played in. goal for Athletic and both sides attacked in turn. Just prior to the final whistle sounding Smith attempted a long dropping shot which just landed over the crossbar, and time was sounded with the score: Celtic 2, Athletic Old Boys 1. Mr J.
