OBITUARY

PASTOR F. J. SIVYER, B.A. The death occurred last evening of Pastor Frederick James Sivyer, 8.A., who for the past six years has been pastor at the Nelson Church of Christ. Mr Sivyer attended church in the morn- ' ing and conducted the Men’s Bible class in the afternoon when he was apparently in Ins usual state of health. He was to have preached last evening, but at about 6 o’clock he had a seizure, death resulting shortly afterwards. Deceased, who was in his 47th year was born at Gyinpic, Queensland. He spent six years at the College of the B'ble, at Glen Iris, Melbourne, and later took his B.A. degree at Melbourne University. Mr Sivyer was engaged at several churches in Australia before he accepted a call to Nelson. Prior to visiting his relatives in Australia last Christmas, deceased, on a unanimous vote of the church people accepted a two years’ extension of his term here. Although he had not enjoyed the best of health for some time his death was unexpected and the congregation at the Church of Christ last evening were shocked to hear that their leader had passed away. Mr Sivyer was a man oi strong Christian character and was highly esteemed by bis congregation. He was particularly successful as a preacher among the young people. Deceased leaves a widow and one child. MRS GEORGE BELL Mrs George Bell whose death has been reported was the youngest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs James Knapp, pioneer settlers of Spring Grove. In the early seventies she was for many years a teacher of the infant classes in the local school, when it was one of the main schools of the district. Later on she married Mr G. Bell, a farmer of Waimea- West, where they resided for over 25 years, the deceased being widely known for her kindness and hospitality. Having disposed of the farm about 14 years ago, they have lived in quiet retirement in Nelson. Much sympathy will be extended to Mr Bell, who is still confined to !iis bed after a long illness. Messrs W. H. and F. V. Knapp are brothers of the deceased. MR F. C. GOODENOUGH (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, Ist September The death has occurred of Mr F. C. Goodenough, chairman of Barclay’s Bank. Mr Frederick Cranfurd Goodenough Hon. D.C.L., was bom in Calcutta, in 18(i(i. His grandfather was headmaster of Westminster School, and afterwards Dean of Wells, and his great grandfather was the Bishop of Carlisle. He was educated at Chaterhouse and Zurich University. Afterwards he became a governor of Charterhouse and a member of the governing body of the School. From 1917-30 he was a member of the India Council. The late Mr Goodenough held the position of Chairman of Barclay’s Bank (Ltd.); Chairman of Barclay's Bank (Dominion, Colonial and Overseas); Chairman of Barclay’s Bank (France)’ Ltd., Director of the Alliance Assurance Co.; Director of Westminster Chambers Association, Ltd.
