COUNCIL’S MONTHLY MEETING REVIEW OF ACTIVITIES IN RIDINGS ADDITIONAL STAN AT APPLEBY BRIDGE The monthly meeting of the Waimea County Council westerday was attended by Councillor J. Cord or, chairman (Wangamoa riding), R. Teece (Moutere), Horatio Everett (Motueka), L. H. Higgins (Motupiko), E. W. Gibbs (Wangapeka), A. Kenyon (Dcvedale), G. Manson (Stoke), L. M. Palmer (Appleby) and Herbert Everett (Wai-iti). Accounts amounting to £3688 were passed for payment. Bank balances as at 3 p.m. on Thursday 9th August were: Credit.

The County Engineer (Mr W. Bullivant) reported as follows: Wangamoa Riding: The Nelson-Hind section of the highway has been continued. The widening of Oldhams creeK bridge lias been completed, and the work on tlie approach is in hand. Smith s footbridge, Maitai Valiey, lias been repaired. A survey has been made of the proposed deviation on the Lower Wangamoa road where erosion from the Wangamoa river is threatening the road near Mr Denker’s property. The raising; of the level of the road would require the shifting of 600yds of spoil. Gravelling has been done on the Lud river road and and various by-roads have been patched. Stoke riding: The committee appointed by the Council met a committee ot the Cawthron Trust Board on 4th August, with reference to the application for exemption from section 128 of the Public Works Act, of that portion of Jenkins Hill main highway fronting the Institute’s property at Wakatu. In view of the advisability of acquiring land for widening this section of the road it was decided that a 15 link strip along the Cawtbroil property frontage be offered to the council at valuation. The committee inspected the gum tree at Annesbrook which Mrd Vincent Deo requested permission to cut, and decided that the request could not be granted. Appleby riding: Arrangements had been made with the Richmond Borough Council for the county to take over the maintenance of the boundary road from the Three Brothers corner to the Appleby Cheese Factory until the completion of the proposed bitumen sealing. A start is being made with the construction of an additional 30 feet span at the west end of the Appleby bridge. Willow protection work has been done above and below the bridge. The purchase of the temporary bridge at present at Higgins creek was ■ recommended to be placed at Colt's splash crossing on the Brikhtwater-Wai-mea West road. Metalling had been done on the Serpentine and Aniseed Valley roads and slips cleared on the Rocks cutting, Aniseed Valley. Wai-iti riding: Metalline on the Rich-moncl-Foxhill section of highway has been continued. Arrangements are being made to widen the present road at Franklin's crossing, Wakefield, Mr Martin having agreed to give the necessary land. Decking on the Pigeon valley bridge has been repaired. Unemployment relief work has been continued on the Dovedale Saddle. The engineer had inspected the Mount Heslington road hut had not yet had an opportunity of investigating the cost of acquiring land for widening purposes. It was recommended that Mr Murcott be informed that the cost of protection of Kerr’s bank ford, Wairoa river, would he too great. Gravelling would be done on the Spring Grove back road, Brightwater-Waimea West road, and road to the river from Brightwater as soon as possible. An additional street light was recommended for the Bright-water-Spring Grove road, also one for Pitfurs road corner, Wakefield.

Motupiko riding: Gravelling has been done on Spooner’s range which was in a very sticky condition following the recent snow. Pretty Bridge valley road has been gravelled, and gravelling has been authorised on the Wai-iti river road. Higgins creek bridge approaches are nearing completion. A small groyne will be put in and willows planted below the Norris Gully bridge where the stream is eroding the approach. A bridge destroyed by a slip on Faulkiner’s track has been replaced. Wangapeka riding: Fretting batters on the Hope Saddle have caused a great deal of trouble following snow and rains, and a gang of men has been employed on both sides of the saddle clearing water tables. The road formation on '.be Glenhope side of the deviation at the top of the saddle was very badly cut up and practically impassable at the beginning of the month, and gravelling had to be done with granite sand from the Hope river pit and a little gravel from Moorehouse’s creek. Pipes have been driven at Moorehouse’s creek to ascertain the nature of foundations, and plans for the bridge are in hand. A footbridge on the Glen Rae road has been repaired. Culverts have been installed on the Tapawera-Baton road and water tabling done on the Baton saddle.

Dovedale riding: Repairs to flood damage on the Motueka-Kohatu main highway are nearly completed. Repairs to the Dove river bridge approach, Thorpe, have been completed. On the lower portion of the Herring stream, road stringers are being renewed in a decayed bridge which is being redecked with the old running decking from the Alexander Bluffs bridge. Gravelling has been done on the Pearce river road and protection work to the outfall of Best’s bridge on the Wakefleld-Woodstock main highway lias been completed. Motueka riding: Widening in the sidling at the road subsidence on the Mo-tueka-Kohatu highway has been completed, and a guard rail erected. Waiwhero road has been patch metalled. Slips on the Sandy Bay end of the road are being cleared. The completion of the Riwaka-Sandy Bay gravelling contract lias been deferred until the road dries out. Gravelling has been done on the Riwaka river road. Clearing of water courses on the Shaggery road is in hand, and flood damage repairs and subsidence on the Takaka hill are in hand. The survey of the main highway in Riwaka for bitumen sealing is in hand. Moutere riding: Repairs of a small concrete bridge near the junction of Waiwhero road will he put in hand shortly. Hopkinsou for the extension of a. culvert crossing the Appleby-Jubilee bridge highway at Tasman, tile engineer recommended that this be dtnie as soon as suitable pipes are available.. The teport w:i& adopted. After further investigation of the replacement of a telegraph pole at the Appdeby bridge the engineer recommended that/ the account be met. The recommendation was adopted.

CORRESPONDENCE Mrs J. Sutton, Brightwater, asked for a footpath to be formed between Brightwater School and her residence. Tlie matter was left to the Engineer to attend to. Air D. L. Bryant, Brightwater, asked for repairs to be carried out on a road leading to tlie Wairoa river from Ruth- I erford’s corner. The matter is at present receiving attention. Mr John Hagen and 34 others asked for an improvement to the road comer near the railway crossing on the Nelson side of Wakefield. Mr Hagen was thanked for drawing the Council’s attention to the matter, which is now re- . ceiving attention. j Mr Martin is to be thanked for giving the land necessary for the widening of the road at the corner. The Ngatimoti branch of the Fanners’ Union wrote asking for an overhaul of the Peninsula bridge, and suggesting that the splash across the road through Holder’s Bush west bank, Motueka river, be concreted. The Engineer stated that tlie Peninsula bridge was quite safe so long as the load restriction was recognised. j Mr W. L. Inwood, Pangatotara, drew the Council’s attention to an overflow of water from the Rocky river to Shaggeiy road and on to his property. Tlie matter was referred to the riding member and engineer with power to act. Mr A. M. Dormer, Mapua, applied for permission to encroach on the load with his boundary fence. Tlie Engineer and Riding member are to inspect. Mr Hubert Holdaway, Lower Moutere, asked for permission to lower by one foot the culvert across Ching’s road near Memorial Park. The matter was referred to the Riding member and Engineer. Mi’ Percy Baigent, Wakefield, re willow trees felled in Pigeon Valley stream by Wm. Martin. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman, riding member and engineer to attend to. Mr G. W. Hall, Brightwater, applied for pel-mission to erect a kerbside pump in front of his premises. The application was granted. The Department of Internal Affairs notified, the council that a Commission will be set up to consider the matter of the proposed abolition of the Motueka River Board. Tlie Mines Department, Wellington, gave notice of an application which had been received by the Government to proclaim the Baton river a watercourse into which may he discharged tailings and debris not exceeding 1-4 inch in diameter. The Engineer is to report to the Council at the next meeting. The Unemployment Board, Wellington, notified that relief workers can be employed for the eradication of ragwort, the hoard providing a subsidy of 30s per week for married men and 10s per week for single men. Marlborough County Council wrote enclosing a letter objecting to the Highways Board granting permits for loads exceeding highways classifications.
