; There was a time when cannibalism was practised in England, and, more extensively, in Scotland. ■ Ethelfrith, king of Northumberland, who died in 617, is said to Jiave encouraged it'at his Court, where a Welshman, CHvrgi, ate only human flesh, and had a male and a female compatriot s)gin daily, except on Saturdays, when he- slaughtered two of each to avoid desecrating the Sabbath ! St. Jerome, secretary to Pope Damasus, learned about the ji-.ar 380 that the Scots preferred the shepngrd to hisi flocks when hunting in the woods, and moreover, only chose the ’most delicate parts. A race of cannibals .is said' to have existed in the neighbourhood of Glasgow. Even in 1339, lifter Scotland was desolate and famished by the passage of Edward Ill’s armies, a Chrysten Cleek, of Perth, was suspected to set traps for men, women rind children, “and ate them all that he might get.”
