ON THE TURF

HORSES FOR NELSON MEETING ARRIVALS FROM COAST AMD NORTH ISLAND (By “Sir Lancelot ) The veteran campaigner at the forthcoining Nelson meeting is the Solfenno gelding Booster, who was foaled in 1901, and was winning races as a three-year-old. Well placed by J. W. Jennings, who often rode bini to victory, lie won a lot of races for Messrs E. und • McPaddon before the handicappers woke up to what a good galloper he was. One of his most important wins was m tlie Telegraph Handicap of 1000 sovs, the second leg of the double at Rapier s Wellington Cup meetin. A. E. Didliam had the mount at 7.7 that day. Twelve horses were belter backed and followers of tlie West Coaster got a “hatful” off the tote, lie was past his prime when he competed at tlie Nelson meeting four years ago. Misfire, who is engaged in the Novice Stakes on the opening day at Richmond, is a three-year-old gelding by Royal Shot.- -Misgovern, who paid a. great price in the Glen Memorial when she defeated seven more fancied runners at Gamecock’s Cup meeting.- Misfire was among tlie runners in the Novice Stakes at Taulierenikau on Easter Monday. He is a stable mate of Bay Area in A. Goodman’s Trentham establishment.

Arvada was engaged at tho Marton meeting on the 21st, but, taking the Nelson acceptances as a reliable guide, New Plymouth owner-trainer R. Johnson will be represented at Richmond by Lalla Quex and Arvada. Both horses showed good form at Feilding at Easter time. Lalla- Qucx was third in the Onepuhi Hack 'Handicap, ten furlongs, and similarly placed in the Oroua Hack Cup, ten furlongs, carrying 7.9 to Colossical, 7.7. In the Nelson Cup, over the same distance, Lalla Quex comes in on lOlbs better terms. That allowance ought to bring them together. IT. Goldfinch rides for tiie Taranaki stable, but as be cannot do less than 7.9 W. E. Pine, who rade Arvada in the Makino Handicap on the second day at Feilding, may have the mount in the Cup. In the race mentioned Arvada carried 7.8 and ran second to Senegal, 7.10, in 1.27 3-5. Zetes, the full brother to Agricon, who cost Mr Vivian Riddiford 2400 as a yearling, and was sold as a five-year-old for £ogs, holds his place in the Nelson Cup, and will evidently forfeit his engagements at South Canterbury on Saturday. He was in the money at Westland, twice at Greymouth, and again at Reefton. On his West Coast form he might have been better engaged in the Waimea Handicap, and met a much weaker field than in tlie Cup. The only member of T. R. George’s team that declined engagement on the opening day at Richmond was Prostration, who may make his next appearance in Sydney. For the benefit of those followers of the sport of kings who would like to follow tlie successful Blenheim trainer, it might be mentioned that the stable representatives engaged on Saturday are Zionist, Consummation, Korere, Revision, Miladi, Little Doubt, Might, Bettwyscoed and Make Up. The Riecarton trained and West Coastowned Silver Sight, who was a surprise nomination for the Nelson meeting ,declined his engagements on the opening day. He is engaged at Waimate on Thursday, and South Canterbury on Saturday next. The Blenheim-trained Might, who suffered a slight injury on the West Coast trip, was intended to be a starter in tlie Cup, but it was decided to enter him in the shorter distance races on account of his injuries. Rabbifonn, who claims an engagement in the Novice Stakes at Nelson, is a two-vear-old chestnut filly by Rabbi from the Ringform * mare Emiform, and she is owned by Mr A. M. Farnall, of Blenheim, whose colours Bellbroney successfully carried at Napier Park last month. Five of the seven acceptors for tlie Novice Stakes at Nelson bail from Blenheim. and three of them are in T. R. George’s team. Consummation and Pawky are owned by Mr J. F. D. Cony, and Zionist by George himself. Consummation, a three-yenr-old halfsister to Grand Knight to Landmark and Revision, went two good races at Tauhcrcnikaij. at Easter to finish third and second respectively, and she looks to have a first-rate chance of opening her winning account at Nelson.
