TOWN CLERK AS FIRE BOARD SECRETARY When the re-appointment of officers came up for consideration at the annual meeting of the Nelson Fire Board yesterday Mr McCarthy said he had mucii pleasure in recommending the reappointment of .Mr F. Mitchell as secretary. The Board had been very fortunate in securing his services in the initial stages. The quick way he had been able to advise them on the fine points of local body matters had saved a great deal of time. Mr Hutton seconded the motion. He agreed with all Mr McCarthy had said. He did not know of any board secretary so capable or efficient. The chairman said they greatly appreciated the remarks of their Wellington members. Mr McCarthy: “We mean every word too.” Councillor Neale said there had been a great deal of trouble in getting the Council to agree to the Town Clerk taking on these duties but it had been fully justified. He hated to think where they would have been if they had appointed someone without special knowledge of the work. Mr A. Dee: “If we had had an outsider he would have taken up more of the Town Clerk’s time in conferring with him regarding all the details- in which the Fire Board and the Council were involved. Mr Mitchell returned thanks for the remarks made. He had received most valuable assistance from Mr Mead of the Council staff who was a most capable officer and willingly agreed to keep the books. The chairman said the work of the Council and Fire Board was so interwoven that the appointment was justified from that point of view alone.
