OBITUARY
PROMINENT WHAKATANE SETTLER. (By Telegraph—Press Association) WHAKATANE. This Day. The death occurred this morning of Alexander Peebles, aged 79 years. He was born in St. Andrews, Fifesliire, Scotland, and arrived in Hawkes Bay with his parents when five years of age. He spent his early days at Coromandel and Mercury Bay, and was mino manager at Kuaotunu when lie drew a section of the Opouriao estate in 1896. He commenced farming and later storekeeping. He was a member of tho first Whakatane County Council in 1900, tho first chairman, and served that body ever since with the exception of one term. He had been chairman .of the Bay of Plenty Hospital Board since 1911, a member of tlie Power Board since its inception, and prominent Mason, a foundation member of tlie Whakatane A. and P. Association and president for several years, and a member of the Taneatua Bowling Club. He leaves a widow, four sons, and three daughters.
