NEW SILVER COINS
GOVERNMENT ACTION APPLAUDED (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. Following the decision of the Government to limit the number of proof sets of New Zealand coins and single crown pieces to orders submitted before the coins are actually struck, the Treasury has acceded to a request by the New Zealand Numismatic Society to extend the date for receipt of such orders to 30th April It was stated by Mr Sutherland, secretary of the society to-day, that single crown pieces will be obtainable only in proof condition from the Treasuiy on orders sent overseas. Numismatists have applauded the action of the government in keeping the denomination alive while supporters of the decimal system see advantages in the retention of this denomination which is largely in keeping with the Canadian and American dollar, the French five franc piece, the five reichmark piece and other major silver decimal coinage in other parts of the world.
