EPSTEIN’S WORK

BOOK’COVER REPRODUCTION

CONTROVERS7 AROUSED

LONDON, 2.5 th March

Epstein's Istatim “Genesis” caused a fresh outburst of indignation when a reproduction of it was included (to signifiy the unborn generation) in a composite picture for tire dust cover' of Ritchie Calder’s book, “Birth of the Future.”

The publishers wore inundated with letters of protest from scientists, including Lord Rutherford.

Booksellers refused to display the book. Eventually Mr 11. G. Wells came to the rescue. He gave a dinner in Calder’s honour, and asked the guests their opinion of the dust cover, which was condemned almost unanimously. Mr Wells then wrote a short ammoelation of the author, which the publishers accepted, hi lieu of the design. Epstein, who .was the only person not consulted says: “It seems rather old-fashioned, does it not?”
