RETAINED BY NELSON MARGIN OF ONLY 13 RUNS O’SULLIVAN MAKES 99 NOT OUT FOR MARLBOROUGH Nelson retained the Newman Shield against Marlborough's challenge by the narrow margin of 13 runs after the latter half of the challengers’ team had played a fine uphill innings yesterday afternoon.

In the first innings Nelson made 289 and in the second 268. Marlborough's first innings realised 272 runs, leaving them with 286 to get in the second innings to win.

Yesterday morning the challengers commenced to lose wickets, cheaply and by the luncheon adjournment appeared to have littlcj. hope of success with five wickets down for 86 runs. However, after lunch Rowe batted solidly for 39 and O'Sullivan commenced a fine fighting innings which almost pulled the game out of the fire for Marlborough. The sixth wicket added 6i? runs, the seventh 42, the. eighth 31, the ninth 25 and the tenth 29, the innings ending with the total at 272, exactly the same figure as in the challengers’ first innings. O’Sullivan’s 99 not out was a magnificent effort in the circumstances and the close finish: invested keen interest to the play. O’Sullivan hit 12 fours and was unlucky that he did not quite complete his century which would have, been well merited by bis splendid performance.
