The monthly meeting of the Nelson Automobile Association held in llie Institute last evening was ullended hv Dr. S. A. Gibbs (president) in the chair, Alcssrs C. AL Rout, W. E. Wilkes, A. Dee, E. 11. Thomson, C. A. Hunter, 11. J. Savage, F. Smallbone, W. R. Grace, E. A. Bone, G. Cunningham, L. N. Arontgomery, and N. Kerr. Apologies were received from Messrs J. CL Ingram, A. Bensemaim, and J. Biggar. The chairman reported that he had interviewed the Public Works engineer about the Hope Saddle road in view of the forthcoming visit by the Alain Highways Board. The best way would be to bracket the Hope Saddle and Collins Valley ns equally necessary for improve, meats.

It was decided that in the event of having to decide between them, the Collins Valley should come first. New members were elected as follows : Afesdnmes Alaunder and IT. S. Robison. Alisses U. AL Allison (Richmond) and A r . S. Bvemner, Afcssrs A. V. Coombes, W. D. Drake. R. B. Fell, TI. Hopkins, and W. Lamb. Ah* A. E. Alax (an executive member) tendered bis resignation in writing. Til an accompanying letter lie said that he supported other members in their criticism of the executive. ATr Wilkes moved and Air Savage seconded that the resignation be accepted with regret. An amendment was moved by ATr Cunningham that the matter he deferred for a month and that All* Affix he asked to supply some of the criticism of the executive causing him to tender his resignation.

Afr Bone seconded the amendment which was carried.

ATr Barltrop (a member of the executive) also sent in his resignation. Tie was opposed to the raising of the subscriptions. He also considered no member of the Association should be on the Transport Board : lie held strong views on the Transport Act. Tt was moved that the resignation be accepted.

All* Rout doubted whether it was a function of the Automobile Association to hold a debate on the Transport Act. Not many of the executive were fully conversant with the Act and there was not much to he gained hv the discussion. Probably ATr Barltrop did not realise this at the previous meeting when a discussion was asked for.

Some speakers considered Hint bnlli resignations arose out of I ho. same incident hit a previous meeting when a member was ruled out of order. ■Dr. Gibbs said if members were going to resign because lie enforced the rules o f nrocednre lie would get out of the chair.

Tt was /.resolved fine.llv that consideration of + he resignation be withheld for one month. Tn regard to the removal of a reficetoi*. which matter, had been placed, ui the hands of the police? the uwoector scrolled that no trace of iL had been- discovered.

Savage, and the secretary were appointed a deputation.

TELEPHONE AT MARTHA SPRINGS

Miss C. H. Morris, Manila Springs ■sought tlie Association’s support in connection with having a telephone installed at- the Springs. It was stressed that a considerable number of applications were made by visitors for a ’phone, and tne prospects of revenue would justify the installation. The chairman pointed out that the. nearest telephone was some sixteen miles away. The inconvenience was very great. The arguments in favour of a telephone in such a place which was heavily patronised, were overwhelming. The department was not justified in considering there was no prospect ol revenue. Apart from £• s.d. the department owed a duty in linking up parts used as health resorts. ITe moved that the Association strongly endorse the application for the extension of the telephone service to Maruia Springs. The motion was seconded hy Mr Hunter and carried. Mr F. Clarke wrote complaining of the difficulty in seeing the sign at the loop road, Tophouse. It was resolved that, an additional sign he erected. Full information was supplied hy the secretaries of North Island associations about free break-down services. The, secretaries are to meet shortly to discuss the scheme, which includes all the North Island except Wellington ami Auckland, after six months' experience. The chairman considered it advisable to find out the result of that meeting.

The correspondence was rclerred to the siih-commiLtce dealing with the matter. ,

As a result of a tour of investigation the secretary reported on signposts in the Motueka. Valley and towards the West Coast. The recommendations were dealt with in detail, and some new signs are to be erected, and others brought up to date. . The secretary 1 considered more signs were needed in ftiwaka, and the matter was referred to Air Hunter for a report.

A sample of the new reflectors, a dozen of which have been received, was exhibited. Tt was remarked dial, they were hotter Ilian the previous bulls-cye reflectors.
