DEARER MILK

LESS CONSUMPTION (By Telegraph—Press Association) AUCKLAND, 6th April. The public’s reaction to the increase in milk prices has been to restrict consumption. While it is difficult to ascer-, tain precisely the extent of the decline, inquiries indicated that it' amounts to at least 10 per cent. 1 One estimate, based on the consumption in a large residential area, is that the average household has reduced its daily purchase from If pints to pints, a drop of over 14 per cent. Prices during the “milk war” were 4d a quart for bottled milk and 3d a quart for loose milk. Following a conference in July presided over by the lion. J. G. Cobbe, most venders increased their prices to 4£d and 4d. respectively, while the newly-formed milk council fixed temporary prices of SJ-d and 5d to operate from 17th March until the end of this month, when the schedule will be revised.
