NEWMAN SHIELD
MARLBOROUGH’S CHALLENGE
A. NEWMAN’S FINE INNINGS FOR 157 RUNS
CRESWELL TAKES SIX WICKETS
FOR VISITORS
The outstanding feature of the first day’s play in tlie Newman Shield cricket match between (Nelson (holders) and Marlborough was A. Newman’s cliancelcss innings of 157 runs for Nelson. Going in first wicket down he gave a most attractive display using a variety of shots, his square cuts and off drives being a pleasure to watch. After reaching the century lie hit very freely and was dismissed when attempting to hit O’Sullivan over the southern boundary. Stevenson was fielding on the boundary and ‘lie brought off a splendid catch. Newman hit 1(1 fours and 2 sixers, and lie was at the wickets only 150 minutes. Neale, Nelson’s opening batsmafri, batted much better than he has done for some time his 05 being a valuable contribution' to the total. Noale’s innings saw him complete his 1000 runs for the season! With the score at 203 for three wickets it looked as if Nelson would put up a' large score, but none of the remaining batsmen impressed and the whole side was out for 259 runs. Creswell was tlie most successful visiting howler with six wickets for 80- runs.
The Nelson side was captained by J. Newman, while Hundleby was the captain of the challengers. Marlborough opened their innings after the tea adjournment and at the end of the day’s play had lost six wickets for 103 runs. Auty was at the wickets for 80 minutes in making his 17 not out before stumps were drawn. Scores:—
