BISHOP SADLIER’S DEPARTURE

APPRECIATION OF LONG AND VALUABLE SERVICE RESOLUTION ON BEHALF OF CITIZENS At last night’s meeting of the Nelson City Council, Councillor F. W. Huggins made reference to the departure from Nelson of the lit. Rev. the Bishop of Nelson (Dr. W. C. Sadlier) after 22!, years service in the Nelson Diocese, lie said the Bishop was a spiritually-minded man who had a great capacity for work. As senior Chaplain with the. New Zealand Forces he was very much respected. Tile Bishop left Nelson having gained the high regard of all denominations, and his departure was generally regretted. Councillor Huggins then moved the following motion:

“That the Nelson City Council desires to place on record its regret at the departure of Dr. Sadlier, Bishop of Nelson, and on behalf of the citizens of Nelson, desires to express its appreciation of his long and valuable service to the community ins a churchman and citizen. In bidding him and Mrs Sadlier farewell, the Council trusts that they will lie spared for many years to enjoy their well-earned rest. The Council directs that a copy of this resolution under the seal of the corporation he forwarded In the Bishop as a mark of the respect and esteem in which he is held.”

Councillor S. 11. Moynagh seconded the motion, and in doing so he endorsed Councillor Huggins’ remarks.' He was pleased the previous speaker had referred to the spiritual work of the Bishop who had earned the esteem of citizens. The Bishop was always cordial and genial and a gentlemanly man to meet. Councillor H. E. A. Washbourn supported the motion. The Bishop was an outstanding personality, he said, was generally respected, and had played a part in the, life of the city. The Mayor (Mr W. J. - Moffatt) said all were aware that he had had several opportunities of expressing his sentiments regarding his Lordship, and he felt all he had said had the endorsement of all citizens. The Council had been pleased to have the Bishop at a number of public functions, and his addresses were always of an inspiring nature. He endorsed the good wishes expressed to Bishop and Mrs Sadlier. The motion was then carried.
