CHRISTMAS SHOPPING

COMMENT BY SHOPKEEPERS HAPPY CROWDS IN THE CITY Over the last few days the number of people about in the city has indicated that shopkeepers would have a successful Christmas, and a visit to the various shops to-day confirms that opinion. This morning large numbers of people were about in the streets and most shops were doing good business. A happy Christmas spirit was apparent on all sides. It was anticipated that the final rush this afternoon and this evening would result in the seasonal turnover being better than last year’s in most classes of business. The many firms who have put forward special efforts in attracting seasonal trade have been pleased with the results, according to the comments made by businessmen to an interviewer to-day. The manager of a large drapery and mercery shop said that by yesterday they liad passed last year’s Christmas figures, and expected another good day to-day. “Business has shown a marked improvement over last year,” lie said, adding that there was a better shopping spirit this year. He considered the recent rains had had a good psychological effect on the minds of the public and this had resulted in better business from the country districts especially. The manager of a- firm handling men’s wear said he was very pleased with the seasonal buying and after the last few days he would be disappointed, if today’s business did not result in an increased turnover on last year’s figures. “We have done steady business up to now,” said one businessman “and expect the usual last minute rush to-day. Our figures should equal last year’s.” Another business man said he had not anticipated that such good business would be done as has been the case; and was satisfied if he had made a better effort even better results would have been achieved as he was satisfied more money had come to light for Christmas spending than ho had expected. “It’s just like old times, and we re delighted,” was the comment of the manager of one large shop visited. As indication Wo did better business last Thursday than we did on Christmas Eve last year. There have been happy crowds of shoppers about and we find people easier to seiwe than has been the case for several years.” . . It would appear from the enquiries made that the more useful class of gifts have received most attention. This is probably the result of the experience of the last few years, as one shopkeeper pointed out. There was a general feeling of optimism among shopkeepers.. It is hoped that conditions will continue to imjarove and that the new year will find the Dominion around the corner and well on the way to better times.
