TENNIS TEST
AUSTRALIA’S DOMINANT POSITION McGRATII DEFEATS PERRY (United Press Association—By Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright) BRISBANE, 22nd December. Results in the second day’s play in the tenuis Test Australia v. England were : Singles Wilde beat Moon 7-5, 6-4. McGrath boat Perry 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Hopmau beat Lee 6-2, 3 6, 8-6 Doubles McGrath and Quist beat Hughes and Wilde 1-6, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4. Australia is now in an invincible position with seven rubbers to one with four to play. Although Moon started with great dash and appeared to have Wilde’s measure, lie later lapsed into errors, frequently netting the easiest- shots. Wilde made many remarkable recoveries and altogether was more consistent, deliberately slowing the game to force outs bv Moon.
It was McGrath’s wonderful tenacity that enabled him to prevail over Hie British champion, who in the first set gave the impression that lie, would win by straight sets, MrGrath more than matching bis backhand but Perry bad greater strength with his forehand and service. McGrath hit. many winners with a sharply angled forehand, In the deciding sot Perry appeared to be suffering from the great heat, and offereel little opposition, and there was. an absence of the sustained rallies ■ w-lnch marked Ihe earlier sets.
Iloptnan and Lee provided stirring tennis. The Australian went off with great dalli in the first set, but the British player got more jxiee into his shots in the second set, and JJopman made many errors and was often passed. There was great fight for the . final set in which Hopmun slowed up the play and made'winners at the net. From mediocre club class in the opening sets the tennis in the doubles rose to great heights in the later stages. Both McGrath and Quist early failed on the easiest shots, but then they-took charge and volleyed and smashed effectively. Quist 'was particularly severe overhead. They had redoubtable opponents, especially Hughes, whose, recoveries were uncanny and lie showed himself a truly great doubles player. - --
