MOTUEKA

AMATEUR BOXING TOURNEY BRIGHT DISPLAY (From Our Own Correspondent) On Saturday evening, the MoluekaKiwaka Amateur Boxing Association staged a bright and interesting nine bouT tourney, in the Institute Hall. Owin' l, to counter-attractions the hall was not so well filled with spectators as on previous occasions. The association is. however, to be complimented oil its efforts to provide the public, at these tournaments, with a programme of worth-while events and should therefore lie accorded a full measure of support by the sporting enthusiasts of the district. Mr Leo. Maiioy undertook the duties of announcer in his usual capable manner.

I The programme: | The. first contest was between A. ! Hendni (Blenheim) 5.7 and O. Ewers 1 (Motueka) 0.3. Ewers had the advantage in weight and strength and was very aggressive. This was off-set Jby Ilendra possessing more skill than | his opponent. The decision was a draw, j The match betwen J. Furness (Blenheim) 11.0 and R. Watson (Nelson; j i 0.5 proved very interesting. The foi liner gave an exhibition of scientific J boxing, while Whitson fought an up-hill 1 battle against his polished opponent. : Furness was much too fast for tlie Nel'son hoy; and his hits were accurately j timed." The decision was awarded Furness by a good margin. Although i Furness is only IS years of age, he 'has had 2<i fights; and has lost only 2 : a very creditable record. His style ! and action remind one very much of I the late Harold Thomas, of Wellingjtou, who was well-known to Motueka I followers of the art, as a rapid and accurate hitter and a clean fighter. S. Baker (Riwaka) 7.3 was matched with J. Dunn (Blenheim) 7.0. This was an exhibition of fighting rather than of boxing. The boys slugged each other with hearty goodwill from first to last; and there was not a great deal between them. Baker’s south-paw stance left him open to right-hand punches by Dunn, which turned the scale in the latter's favour. The decision was given to Dunn. G. James (Motueka) 10.8 fought T. Trov (Nelson) 10.10. These boxers were well matched in every respect and fought mi even battle. It was one of the" best bouts of the evening. Thd first round was even with* James the aggressor —and doing most of the leading. The second was also won by James, by a slight margin. Troy showed up better in the first part of the third round; but James recovered well and evened matters up to secure a decision. W. Evans (Riwaka) 7.12 met H. Jones (Whakarewa) 7.10. Evans was short and miggetty while Jones was more rangy. The former proved more aggressive and the stronger of the two. He forced the fighting in the first round, all the way. Jones did better in the second round and, a little more than held his own. The last' round was fairly even; but Evans was still doing most of the attacking and secured the decision. I C. Waide (Nelson) 9.0 was matched 'with B. Johnstone (Riwaka) 9.4. This bout terminated at the commencement lof the second round, when Johnstone ! intimated that he did not wish to conjtinuc. Johnstone did quite well until ; half-way through the round, when lie j went down for_a count of five; but did | not appear to be very much hurt. He fell again and was saved by the gong. Waide was not quite as active as | Johnstone hut was a hard-hitter. J. Outliers 10.12, met F. Ford I (Motueka) 10.0. These boxers were a I queorly assorted pair and seemed unj able to do anything with each other, although both were in dead earnest. | In the first round the referee was conI tinually separating them from clinches, only to find them together the next instant. In the next two rounds he refused to break, and let them go, which meant that they had to fight themj selves out of the holds. They thus provided a considerable amount of action, although it may not have been strictly in accordance with the rules. The referee awarded a draw.

ii W. Osgood (Blenheim) 10.7 fought jT. Godfrey (Nelson) 10.4. Osgood had the advantage of a longer reach, which ’: he made good use of in the first round. [Godfrey led the fighting for a part of ' the second round but was caused to ' miss on several occasions. The third ‘ round was faster; and'Osgood landed : frequently on Godfrey’s face. Osgood was awarded the decision, j A. Wills (Motueka) 9.7 met F. . Waide (Nelson) 9.10 in a six two minute round contest. This was the main j event on the programme. Owing to Hendra (Blenheim) being unable to pass the medical examination through {an injury to his eye, Waide was subi stituteil *to fight Wills. The bout was ! an excellent one, Wills proving superior to the well-known Nelson boy at the • end of six bright rounds. Wills boxed [more or less on the defence, during the | first two rounds, which Waide won by : a good margin. In the third Wills ! seemed to gain more confidence and : commenced to connect on Waide with snappy rights to the jaw, as lie came in. The fourth round also went to Wills by a small margin of points. In the fifth some splendid fighting was seen, both boys mixing it freely at close quarters, in which department Wills proved superior. The last round was again a fast one, Waide trying hard to land a right-hand punch on Wills’ jaw. The latter, however, covered splendidly, and countered with bursts of clean two-handed hitting; { and this, coupled with his superiority in in-fighting, secured him a popular decision. Messrs A. J. Parris, Blenheim, and E. Sigley, Riwaka, officiated as referees, their*decisions being favourably received by an enthusiastic audience. HOCKEY MEN’S CHALLENGE ROUND MOUTERE A 3, MOTUEKA 1 Motueka had not been beaten this season until Saturday, when Moutere won by 3 points to 1. Moutere j put forward their strongest eleven, 1 players being taken from A anil J? teams. A feature of the games was the excellent defence work of the two goalies —Richards (Moutere) and Mays (Motueka). Messrs H. N. Glover and G. Sturgeon refereed the match. MOUTERE B 4, RIWAKA 4 The match Moutere B versus Riwaka was fast and evenly contested, Moutere B putting u]i a surprisingly good game against Riwaka. Messrs H. Stanton and A. E. Lindrup refereed. Both men’s ! games were played at 1.30 p.m. on the Motueka Cricket Ground. LADIES’ HOCKEY ATUA 1, MOUTERE 1 Atua played Moutere at Riwaka, the
