MEETING OF NELSON BOARD BUSINESS DEALT WITH The Nelson Education Board met today There were present: The Hon. W.. H. Mclntyre, M.L.0., (chairman), Messrs F. A. Carling, F. V. Knapp, J. G. Wilkens, 11. Wood and E. J. Scantlebury. Mr J. H. Harkness and Mr W. C. Baigent were excused from attendance. Accounts totalling £5201 8s 9d were passed for payment. Tlie secretary reported that the total cost of erecting a portable school and providing equipment at Henehaka was £45 6s. It was resolved to apply to the Department for a grant to cover the same. On behalf of the executive committee the chairman said the Reefton Committee had been met and the question of a site for the new school building was thoroughly discussed. It was agreed to erect the school at a snot where the maximum amount of sunshine would be obtained and at the same time far enough away from the road to avoid the dust nuisance. It was agreed to approve of the site. The Department notified the reservation of a section for school purposes at Wai-uta. Mr J. Creighton asked that the school building at Warwick Junction be removed to a more central site. It was resolved to agree to the proposal and that £5 be granted towards the cost of removal. It was resolved to lease a portion of the Oparara School ground to Mr F. Lowe for 10s an acre per annum. A request from the Arapito Committee for a grant for renewing the classroom and additional cupboards was referred to the chairman. In reply to a suggestion made by the Automobile Association to the Auckland Point School Committee, it was resolved to erect stop rails in front of the school gates. The Auckland Point School Committee’s application for a grant to cover the cost of seeds was declined. A grant of £5 was made to the Brightwater Committee for a new tank. Requests from committees were dealt with as follows:—Nuggety Creek, grant for ground improvement, held over; Punakaiki, repairs and fencing, held over ; Redwood’s Valley, £4 granted for ground improvements; Reefton, £5 granted for incidental expenses; Richmond, grant declined; Rotokohu, grant for incidental expenses deferred for further information; Central Takaka, £1 granted for cost of lawn mower'; Wai-iti, £3 granted for repairs to residence, grant for ground improvement referred to Mr Wilkens; Wakefield, boundary fence to be repaired, and repairs to he made to Technical School; Westport, £l6 granted for alteration to classrooms; Dcnniston, granted £5 for incidental expenses; Hamama, £2 for cost of fencing ; Molupiko, £5 for new tank. The report of tile foreman was received. When a letter was read from the Department advising the amount of the maintenance grant for the remainder oE tlie financial year, the chairman said something must be done to obtain ail increased grant, which now amounted to only £165 a month. Mr Knapp agreed, and moved that the matter bo left to the chairman and the secretary. The motion was carried.

Mr Carling considered the general fqeling in the country was that the. Education grant should not he interfered with to the extent it was. Several circular from tlie Department were dealt with. In connection with a letter from the Otago Board as to engagement of unemployed teachers- under a rationing scheme, it was resolved that it he received, and that a vigorous protest be made against the closing of the Christchurch Training College.
