During the trip to Wellington on Friday night Mr W. Deo junior, who was on his way to see the inter-collegiate tournament (in which he took part last season) was taken suddenly ill on the steamer. On arrival at Wellington Mr G. Chapman, of the Nelson Hospital, ad. vised Mrs Dee (who had previously gone to Wellington) to call in Dr. Parr who ordered immediate removal to the Bowen street hospital, where an operation for appendicitis was performed. The patient, who appeared to be in the best of health when lie left Nelson on Friday evening, is making good progress.

Mr Alfred Ernest Allison, Commissioner of the Government Life Insurance Department, intimated his desire to retire from tlie service, and will relinquish liis duties on 30tli September after more than 47 years' service. Mr Allison, who was born in Christchurch, is a member of a family resident in Canterbury for some 80 years.
