STOKE SCHOOL

CHILDREN’S FANCY DRESS BALL AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS At the Stoke Public Ilall there was a record crowd of parents, friends and children of the local school. It was the largest attendance at a Stoke function and the hall was gaily decorated. There were about 120 in fancy costume and the varied colours and costumes made a lively and animated scene never to be forgotten. The music for the dances was excellent, being supplied by Mr W. Pearce's orchestra. Mr S. F. Morris, headmaster of the Stoke School, was the M.C. till 9 o’clock, after which Mr Hector Ching took charge, when the adults had the lloor to themselves

The teachers had trained the children in numerous folk dances and games and everything went off with a swing from first to last.

The programme for the children’s session was as follows:—Waltz, “Polly put the Kettle On,” Stds. 2 and 3; one step, “Girls and Hoys Come Out to Play,” Std. 1 and infants; Selinger’s Hound, Stds. 4,5, and 6; Oranges and heinous. Infants and Std. 1; Morrjs Stick dances, Stds. 3 and 4; JRufty Tufty, Std. 1 and Infants; Sir Roger do Covcrlcv, Stds. 4. 5, and 6; “Will If oil, Please, be my Partner?” Infants to Std. 2; “Jolly Miller”; ““Reap the Flax,” senior girls: Bisket Basket, Grand March, Butterfly, Stds. 5 and 6; Black Nag, Stds. 3 and 4; waltz. The Grand March was taken in two sections—senior and junior—and there was not a hitch in either. Miss Short, of the school staff, played for the folk dances.

Mr Morris thanked the parents for the trouble they had taken in turning out such excellent costumes and tor attending in such liirjjo numbers. The adult dance was most successinl and the supper arrangements were excellent, being i n the capable hands of the wives of the school committeemen.
