PAKAPOO PLAYING

PREMISES RAIDED HEAVY FINES IMPOSED (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, 18tli August. Five houses in Taranaki street, where it was suspected that pakapoo was being played, were raided by a party of police yesterday afternoon, and "as a result thirty men, nine Chinese and the remainder Europeans, were arrested. In the Magistrate’s Court to-day, before Mr E. Page, S.M., Wing Leo, Wong King, Ah Sain, Ah Wong, and Leu Cheng were charged with using premises situated at 136, T2O, 103, 130, and 134 Taranaki street respectively as common gaming houses. Ah Sam and All Wong, who had previously been convicted, were each fined £3O, and Wing l-.ee, Wong Hing, and Lcn Cheng were each fined £25. Sub-Inspector Martin said that a constable had no difficulty in purchasing tickets on the premises, which had been used for the purpose of playing pakapoo for some time. It was difficult to put a stop to the parcticc. Twenty-four other people found on the premises were eaeli fined £3, with the exception of one, who was fined £l.
