FURTHER ECONOMIES

GOVERNMENT EXPENDITURE (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. Economies in Government expenditure were referred to by Mr Forbes and Mr Masters at a chamber of Commerce function last night. Mr Forbes said that in view of the reduction in national income further economies were necessary. Speaking after Mr Forbes, Mr Masters said he did not think the making of / economies should cease, but it should be remembered what economies the Government had effected. It must not be forgotten when demands were being made for large economies that every service discontinued meant more unemployment.

REDUCTION IN DEPARTMENTAL SERVICES

WELLINGTON, This Day. Referring to-day to his remarks at the Chamber of Commerce dinner last night- as to the necessity for further economies, Mr Forbes said it was obvious that owing to a marked fall in the revenue of the country, due very largely to the drop which had taken place in the price of butter, it would be necessary during the coming financial year to put into operation further economy measures. It was essential, said Mr Forbes, that the country remain solvent, and the only way to achieve that was to reduce expenditure in keeping with the reduction of revenue. Asked if he could indicate what form the economies would take, Mr Forbes said it was too earl” yet to give details, but there was no doubt there would have to be cutting down of departmental expenditure, which would naturally involve a reduction in departmental services.
