INNINGS WIN FOR NELSON COAST’S SECOND INNINGS REALISED 120 RUNS ,T. NEWMAN AND McGIIIII TiOVv’J WELL

Nelson retained the Hawke l Cup against West Coast’s challenge, the holders winning by an innings and 63 runs. On Friday when the game was commenced West Coast went in on a perfect wicket but were all out for 83 by the luncheon adjournment. Nelson batted all the afternoon for 272 runs, leaving the challengers 189 behind on the first innings. Losing three wickets

for 17 runs before lunch on Saturday at no stage did Coast look like, wiping off their deficit. A good partnership late in the innings put on 56, but the total reached only 126. In the second innings J. Newman and Met!irr bowled well, each securing three wickets. Freeman took one wicket but the fielding let him down twice when the batsmen gave chances. The Nelson slip fielding was poor, a number of chances being dropped. DESCRIPTION OF PLAY After a break in the play for 30 minutes on account of a shower Freeman was brought on in place of McGirr (2 for 20). Immediately after Morris had scored double figures he chased one to the off from J. Newman and was caught at second slip by Morgan. 33—4—10.

J. Newman at this stage had bowled ten overs, five of which were maidens, taking two wickets for 13 runs. Knapp joined Marshall at the crease. With the total at 47 Marshall, who was well, drove Newman to cover point and commenced to run, but Alexander, who fielded brilliantly throughout the innings, made a smart return for Max to run out the promising young West Coast batsman before he could get back. 47—5—18. Gilbert, the new batsman, scored a lucky three off Newman to open his score’, and 50 appeared on the board. Then Knapp was caught behind the wickets off Newman and six were down for 54. 54—6—8. With tlm addition of two runs to the total Gilbert attempted a big hit off Freeman but lie skied the ball on the leg side and A. Newman made a good effort to take the catch. 56—7—5. Nightingale made the total 60 with a nice leg glance to the fence off Newman. The total crept up to 65 when Rapley square cut Freeman to point, Nightingale calling for a run. Ralfe returned the ball to the bowler’s end and Rapley failed to get in in time. 65—8—2. At the tea adjournment the total had reached 71. Off the first hall after the adjournment Nightingale gave a high chance to Alexander at mid-off but the ball was not held. Freeman (one for 29) gave way, with the ball to S. Newman, J. Newman (three for 32) gave A. Newman a turn with the ball. Nightingale scored a four and then a three off him. A clean square cut off A. Newman by Reslieaux, brought 100 on the board, the batsmen running four. The century took 110 minutes. Freeman then replaced S. Newman (none for 13). Restieaux slammed Freeman away to the on boundary making his score 20. A double change was made McGirr going on in place of A. Newman and the change proved successful for off McGirr’s third ball Nightingale, who had betted solidly for 27, cocked one up to Neale at mid-off, the fieldsman taking a good falling catch. 111—9—27. The partnership had realised 56. Kennedy was the last man in. Restieaux went on to make top score, four twos making his total 30. S. Newman ended the innings at 126 runs by clean bowling Kennedy.
