NELSON TOURNAMENT UCCESSFUL MEETING CONCLUDES 7"^ The first tournament to decide the winner of this seasons’ singles handicap croquet competition was continued on Thursday and concluded on Friday afternoon. Owing to the number of competitors taking part and only 3 lawns (2 Nelson Club) and 1 Ilineinoa Club) being available play started at 9 a.m. each day and the grounds were occupied the whole time until the final game finished on Friday afternoon. The semi-finals were played in the morning and resulted as follows: On the Nelson Club Lawn: Mrs Levy (Hinemoa) beat Mrs Lee (Nelson) 20-23.

On tlie Hinemoa Club Lawn: Airs Frost (Hinemoa) beat Airs Hume (Nelson) 20-12.

In the afternoon the final game was played on the Nelson Club Lawn when Airs Frost won from Airs Levy 20-12. There was a very large attendance to witness this event, and many of the country clubs’ players came in to gain experience in tournament conditions of play. At the conclusion of play Col. Hume, President of the Nelson Croquet Association, spoke u])on the entire success attending this, their first effort of organising and carrying out a croquet tournament. Weather conditions had been ideal and players had been punctual in their attendance and starting their games each day. Special thanks were due to those ladies who had given up so much time in discharging duties of organisation and management. It was regretted that they had not seen Airs Waters competing; but tli c work she bad put in during the whole period of the tournament was greatly appreciated. Airs Condell had been present on the Hinemoa Lawn the whole time and was responsible for the organisation and -success of that club. Thanks were due to the president and all members of the Nelson Club who arranged for serving of tea given by association at the latter club’s grounds for the filial game when so many were present.

Colonel Hume also moved a vote of thanks to those who had so willingly donated the prizes. It was a pleasure for the town clubs to have so ihany of the country clubs’ members present and it was certain they would have gained much experience by attending the tournament. The president then called on Mrs Hume to present the prizes to the winner, Airs Frost and the runner-up, Airs Levy. A most successful meeting was thus brought to a close. During the meeting it was decided to make a second handicap match for those competitors who laid been beaten in the first rounds. ’Phis bad been played off with exception of the final game between Mrs Grainger and Mrs Brice and as both these competitors are of the Nelson Club, this final will take place at any time arranged by the club captain.
