COLD WAVE
IN UNITED STATES MANY DEATHS VEGETABLE AND FRUIT CROPS DESTROYED (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) NEW YORK, 9lh February. Tho intensive cold wave which drove the temperature down to record low levels 'in many north-western cities, gripped llie nation to-day, with the exception of points on the west coast and the far east. At least sixty deaths are directly attributed to cold, and many more are expected. At Chicago, the temperature was 27 degrees below, the lowest for twentyone years. Seventeen are dead. Fire destroyed an elevator containing much Federal Farm Board wheat, estimated to be worth 3,000,000 dollars. The cold interfered with the firemen. There were no casualties. There are low temperature death reports from as far south as Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. There is freezing weather in Central Florida, and in the Imperial Valley, California, it is the lowest for twenty-one years. Thousands of acres of early vegetables and fruit crops were killed. The temperature in New York reached the season’s low level of 11 degrees below, and is expected to touch 15 tomorrow morning for a five year record Municipal lodging house's are filled to capacity with homeless men.
