BUSINESS AT MONTHLY MEETING CORRESPONDENCE AND GENERAL Further business was transacted yesterday afternoon by the Waimea County Council at the monthly meeting. The application of Mr F. I. Ledger for exemption from the provisions of the Public Works Act for the Arrow street extension Wakefield, and road through Mr D. W. Mitchell’s property, Riwaka, was acceded to. / A circular letter from the Unemployment Board as to tree planting was received and referred to the Rabbit Island committee to deal with. The secretary of the Local Unemployment Committee forwarded resolutions carried at a meeting of the unemployed to the effect that an extra day’s voik be given to the unemployed in order to enable them to pay the current ins.l alment of the dole; also that extra work be given to allow full ration of "< rk during the time they were employed under the scheme. It was resolved to give an extra day’s work as requested; but no action was taken regarding the second request. Mr Harry Cowin, Dovedale, was granted permission to erect a private telephone line in Cozen’s Valley road. A dangerous corner on Eve’s V auey road was drawn attention to by Mr Geo. Arnold. It was resolved to inform the owner of trees obscuring the view that he must comply with section 169 of the Public Works Act. Mr A. Stratford, Richmond, drew attention to the condition of Aniseed Val ley road. The Engineer said the woik was already in hand. Arising out of a letter from Messrs Hodgson and Hooper, Wakefield, as to the Arrow street- extension, it was resolved that the Engineer report to tut next meeting as to flood water; that permission be given to erect a temporary fence, subject to the Engineers approval ; and that the matter of the grade of the footpath be left to the Engineer. The Wakefield Progress Association reminded the Council of its promise to carry out tar-sealin'g of the Wakefield roads, stating that the £lO3 premised contribution by residents was available. It was resolved to inform the Association that the Council was prepared to go on with the work when the approval of the Main Highways Board was received. The request of Mr 'G. R. Grooby, Pangatotara, for permission to lease waste land between Rocky river and the six-foot ditch was left to the Engineer to deal with. , Permission to erect a small hut between the road and Kaka beach was granted to Mr R. Blomfield. Riwaka. Mr T G. L. Tutbury, Riwaka, asked that the old road through his property at Kaiteretere be closed. The Engineer was instructed to report. Mr D. W. McGaveston, asked that repairs be carried out on the Brooklyn Valley road. Councillor Everett was authorised to deal with the request. A petition signed by Stoke residents asked that the watercourse in Poor Man’s Valley through the estate of the late A. 11. Bisley be straightened. The Engineer was instructed do inspect and report. GENERAL In reference to the request of the Brightwater deputation earlier in the day that a portion of the main road at Brightwater be tar seled, Councillor Palmer considered the Council should make every effort to carry out- the work. He moved that the deputation be informed that providing the residents contribute a reasonable amount, and the Main Highways Board grant a subsidy of £2 to £l, the work be proceeded with as soon as opportunity allows. Councillor Everett seconded the motion which was supported by Councillor Tunnicliff. . Councillor Higgins • moved and Councillor Kenyon seconded an amendment, that the matter be deferred until the estimates are considered. On being put the amendment was car l ried, Councillors 'Everett, Palmer and Tunnicliff opposing. It was resolved to purchase a secondhand car for the use of-the Engineer. Councillors Gibbs and Higgins asked that their names be recorded against the motion, considering that the matter should be left for the incoming Council to deal with. Mr Robert Ellis, of the Brightwater Electric Supply Company, waited on the Council and put forward certain proposals for the development of the scheme and asked for the Council’s cooperation. The co-operation of the Taliuna Town Board and the Richmond Borough Council was also being sought. After Mr Ellis had addressed the meeting, it was resolved that the Council convene a meeting of the local bodies interested to discuss the matter. The chairman and Councillor Everett were appointed to represent the Council. In reply to Councillor Tunnicliff, the Engineer said that no money was available at present for scarifying the main highway between Wakefield and Belgrove. On the motion of Councillor Gibbs, the Engineer was empowered to spend “thirds” on Mr O'. Sloss’s road, Korere. On the suggestion of Councillor Gibbs, it was resolved to ask the Public Works Department to open up the Wangapeka track. Councillor Gibbs said about a dozen men were now prospecting in the j locality. The Council then adjourned.
