BRAVERY AT WRECK
LOSS OF THE PROGRESS MEDALS PRESENTED DISTINGUISHED HONOUR FOR CONSTABLES (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. Last night his Excellency the Governor-General presented Royal Humane Society Medals to several residents of Island Bay in recognition of their brave conduct in connection with the wreck of the steamer Progress last May. Silver medals were presented to Constables Hammond and Baker, and to Claude Petherick and Raffaelo Alfano. Bronze medals were presented to Peter Isbister Salvi, Volpicelli Salvi, Greco Hugh Lupi, Cataldo Mazzala, Andrew George Tait, T. A. Humphreys, Raffaelo Persico and Ernest Connor.
His Excellency shook hands with each recipient and congratulated him, and at the conclusion led the audience in three hearty cheers in recognition of their conduct.
His Excellency also announced that he had ben advised by the Secretaiy of State for the Dominions that his Majesty the King had been pleased to award the King’s Police Medal to Constables Hammond and Baker for their conspicuous gallantry, the only circumstances under which it was ever given. The medals had not yet arrived but as soon as they had reached the Dominion he would be pleased to hand them over. The announcement was received with ringing applause.
