PRISON ESCAPEES
SURPRISED AT WAVERLEY ONE MAN RETAKEN B.v Telegraph—Press Association) WANGANUI, This Day. After being at liberty for a week and a half one of the two escapees from Hautu prison camp has been arrested. Prompt action by the police led to a car being traced to Waverley racecourse, where it was hidden cleverly in scrub. The two men, Roy Norris, alias Edgar W. Allen, and Charles Bennett, were surprised. The car, which was backed into a boxthom hedge, bore a Palmerston North registration number 87569. It was a five-seater car, and bad been missing from there. Several suitcases containing clothing were found, together with rugs and blankets, while there was an abundance of tinned food. Bennett bolted into the scrub and made his escape, while Norris picked up a pea rifle and defied anyone to touch him. Detective Walsh maintained his position, however, and eventually persuaded the man to lay the firearm down and surrender. He was taken to Waverley lock-up. Tlie search for Bennett is continuing.
