BURMA SITUATION NO MARKED CHANGE (British Official Wireless) RUGBY;, sth August. A statement on the situation in Burma for the week ended Ist August was issued by the India Office. It says that there has been no marked change in the situation and no important collisions between Government forces and the rebels. Several cases occurred of successful resistance by villagers to attacks by rebels and daeoits. There is good reason to hope that efforts by priests are meeting with success, but dacoities are still numerous. There are occasional attacks on Indians and Chinese, but it is doubtful if there is a definite communal motive now.

The Government casualties reported during the week are two Indian infantry sepoys, one Indian officer, ono sepoy of the military police, and ono motor boat driver slightly wounded. Some 163 prisoners have been released. and the total number now in custody is 974. • •,
