THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY
(To the Editor) Sir, —We often hear or read that a protective tariff is applied in order to foster a young industry until it is well established,, and Some Governments will even subsidise a youug industry with that object in view, but these principles do not apply to the tobacco industry in New Zealand. This industry has to pay an excise duty of 2n a pound. Now, Sir, 1 do not know much about the prices that a certain big concern pay their growers for the leaf they buy, but we who grow for another tobacco company generally consider that if we can average 2s a pound for our tobacco crop we have done very well. It will be seen from these figures that this young industry that has sprung up in the Nelson province has to pay the Government, for the light to five, as much or more than it pays those who are carrying on the industry; and apparently this is not enough to satisfy our Government. Judging from its latest effort it wants another lCd a pound from this baby industry. What a splendid Government for the primary producer ! I am, etc., M. K. FORSYTH. Stanley Brook. • •
